Samstag nach dem Frühstück versammelten sich alle auf dem Hotelparkplatz zum Briefing. Danach ging es einzeln nach Roadbook rund um Kleve zur Emmericher Rheinbrücke, dem Bild auf unserer diesjährigen Rallyeplakette. Auf der anderen Rheinseite wurde bei Spyck die Grenze überquert und auf den Deichen fuhren wir über die IJssel nach Arnheim zu der berühmten Brücke (benannt nach dem britischen Oberstleutnant John Frost), die wohl jeder aus dem Film "Die Brücke von Arnheim" kennt. Ein Besuch im dortigen Dokumentationszentrum brachte viel interessante Hintergrundinformationen.
After breakfast on Saturday, everybody gathered on the hotel parking for the briefing. Afterwards, we all set off according to our roadbooks, taking a big circle around Kleve towards the Emmerich Rhine bridge, the image on this year’s rallye plaque. On the other bank of the Rhine the Dutch border was crossed near Spijk, and we drove on top of the dykes and across the IJssel river to the famous bridge in Arnhem (named after the British Lt Col John Frost), surely known to everyone from the film "A Bridge Too Far". A visit to the documentary centre gave lots of interesting background information.
Nach einem ausgiebigen Picknick ging es dann weiter über den Neder-Rijn und die Waal Richtung Nimwegen, wo einer der kompliziertesten Kreisverkehre auf die Teilnehmer wartete. Doch nach ein paar Anläufen schafften es alle und nun ging die Fahrt durch die "Hügel Hollands" und die Maasdünen wieder zurück nach Deutschland, zum ehemaligen Flugplatz Laarbruch der Royal Air Force in Weeze.
Heute befinden sich dort noch ein paar Gebäude, die das britische Erbe deutlich machen, aber ansonsten ist dies der Flughafen Weeze, von wo aus Ryanair Flüge nach ganz Europa anbietet. Allerdings unterhält eine private Initiative dort das RAF Laarbruch Museum, das wir natürlich besuchten. Zwei interessante Führungen (auf deutsch und englisch) brachten uns die Zeit zwischen 1954 und 1999 nahe. Hier der Link zum Artikel über uns im lokalen Online-Magazin.
After a decent picknick the tour went on across the rivers Neder-Rijn and Waal towards Nijmegen, where one of the most complicated roundabouts had to be crossed. But after a couple of attempts everyone made this one and the route continued through the "Dutch mountains" and the Maas dunes back into Germany, to the former Royal Air Force Station Laarbruch in Weeze.
Today only a few buildings tell of the British heritage of the site, nowadays it’s Weeze Airport, where Ryanair offers flights to destinations across Europe. Nevertheless, a private initiative runs the RAF Laarbruch Museum, which we naturally paid a visit. To interesting guided tours (in English and German) revived the time between 1954 and 1999. Von Weeze war es nur ein Katzensprung wieder zurück zum Hotel, wo wir uns dann aufreihten, um mit unseren MGs durch das Restaurant zu fahren und die meisten dann innen zu parken. Abends gab es Livemusik und ein mehrgängiges Büffet mit britisch angehauchten Spezialitäten. Ein wundervoller Abend, der bei künftigen Touren nur schwer zu toppen sein wird!
From Weeze it was just a short drive back to the hotel where we lined up to drive our MGs through the restaurant, giving most of us the chance to actually park their cars inside the restaurant. In the evening there was live music and a three course dinner buffet, made up from British style specialities. A wondeful evening which will be hard to top on the next tours!
