MG Rhein Tour 2018

After a total of six Niederrhein weekends I realised I had driven lots of routes in our area, some of them even more than twice and I got – erm – a bit bored. While this might be no problem for most of the participants, I developed an itch to try something new. Remembering a TV series I had watched a couple of years ago, a documentary about the river Rhine in its entire length, a plan started to unfold. The result of this was the MG Rhein Tour 2018, by all means the largest event I have got going – uh – rolling so far.

Much about this tour was different. First of all that it was a real road trip, staying at a different place every night. Furthermore there was no road book, this time we trusted our sat nav’s capabilities (with slightly variable success). I had sent out the data files to all the participants before the start, and finally all of them arrived – not necessarily taking the same routes. But writing a road book for a distance of 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) would have been impossible.

The conclusion is, such a tour is a very special experience. And old and young go together very well, both regarding the participants and the cars. We had build dates ranging from 1957 to 2004, and this was in perfect harmony on the roads. So the thing will be repeated, and even next year. But not on the Rhine, as that would be boring. No, this time we will go down the river Elbe, from its spring in the Czech Krkonoše mountains to the Ball Beacon in Cuxhaven. The dates are set, the early bird meet will be on Friday evening, 26 July 2019, we will reach our final destination on Saturday, 3 August in the afternoon.
